First of all I would like to thank Ms Softly for asking me to be Tech Editor. I am very pleased and honored that she thought my writing style is good enough to print.
For my first article I decided to cover something mentioned before by Miss Tig Eberdene. The enjoyable creation that is know as SatyrFarm; my article is along the lines of the technical side of establishing a farm. Did you know that you can add any object to your farm? Due to this capability, I got creative, and some of the products from Raptor Nest Vineyards will now be sold in my various stores around the grid. The majority of the items will be only sold in my winery shop at Daniken Estates, a big thanks to Dani Gallager for offering to allow us to setup our shop there.
So other than the official crops that come standard with the farm, I am also growing the following custom plants: Catnip, Lavender, Chili Peppers, Pumpkins, Snowberries, a collection of Herbs, Trees for Coconuts, Cinnamon Bark, and Limes. I recently added Barley as well, and am working with several new ideas. As soon as I have the "Bugs" worked out, I will offer some of them for anyone else who has a farm to use.
There are three ways to add new items to your farm, the easy way, the slightly easy way, and the harder way. The easy way is to wait for someone else to add the item you want, or to ask the creator of the farms if the item you would like can be added to a later version.
The slightly easy way is to right click the item, a tree, one of the fields or any of the other items. Wait for the Object contents screen to open, then click Copy to Inventory. Once its in your inventory rename the SF object to whatever you want to grow. Rez and re-texture the bucket, then add that object back into the original item. Don't forget to change the texture files as well to match your new item. Then you carefully add said item to the list in the config note card.
For Example lets say you want to add something to your SF Small Field. This is the Configuration (Config) note card from it, BEFORE:
PRODUCTLIST=SF Carrots,SF Eggplants,SF Onions,SF Peppers,SF Potatoes,SF Strawberries,SF Sugar Cane,SF Tomatoes,SF Tea Leaves
Lets use Soybeans as an example, you add Soybeans to the PLANTLIST at the very end and SF Soybeans to the end of the PRODUCTLIST. Each addition must have a comma and UNspaced from the item before it, the first letter uppercase or the script will not detect it. So your end result should look like this:
[EXAMPLE AFTER ADDED]
PRODUCTLIST=SF Carrots,SF Eggplants,SF Onions,SF Peppers,SF Potatoes,SF Strawberries,SF Sugar Cane,SF Tomatoes,SF Tea Leaves, SF Soybeans
[EXAMPLE AFTER ADDED]
Every time you add something to your item it resets itself, so no need to reset it. To grow your new product, all you have to do is click on the field like you normally would. Select Plant and click on your newly added product that will now be listed in the menu. [If not, check both your note card as well as your new item for spelling errors, upper or lower case difference.] That is the slightly easy way.
The harder way involves a little imagination, a little nerve, and some skill in photo editing. The only difference between the slightly easy way and the harder way, is that you personally add the textures for what ever item you want. If you want bamboo to grow, you find bamboo textures. Make the background transparent and add the textures to the list. You now have bamboo, all you to do is plant it like the rest and watch it grow.
Or If you want to use the farm and your in a region that is prim conscious and have to watch your prim number very carefully. Do what I said to do in the slightly easy method, and place the contents into a single prim. It will still work but without all the extras to worry about. For example the water tower, will still work as a water tower in a single prim. Just remember to correctly name it for your other items to use it.
I am always experimenting on ideas or products for the farm, so if you have any ideas for what to grow, need input on how to do it, or need help with any other tech issue just ask. If you send me an IM or a note card when I am online and I do not reply right away. It is because I am either working or AFK, I will reply back as soon as I can.
