Who am I?
I am Timo Daehlie, relatively new on the GCG, and I must confess I haven't been much exploring or socializing so far, not to be said that I suffer from agoraphobia or something, it’s just the fact that I’d like to build and have some concepts in my head I want to realize here. With the recent assignment as an art editor of the GCG Sun I hope to change the situation mentioned above: I’ll explore the GCG grid the coming period and will write a sequence of "Exploring Articles" about my escapades.
Am I an artist?
Well to be honest, I did some graffiti in my youth, followed several years of art history classes and now and then I make a painting with acrylic at home, but it’s not my profession neither do I see myself as an artist or want to present myself as one. I am just handy with Photoshop, quick with the building menu and have the talent to think outside the box when I build. Last aspect is made easier cause of the lack of gravity and such in virtual worlds, for example, people tend to build a store when they want to sell their stuff similar to the real life situation. In my opinion a floating well textured prim can functions as a "store" as well.
So how did I end up as an art editor for the GCG Sun?
Recently I had some visitors over at my region and they were pretty enthusiastic of what they saw there, they even dare to call it Art. Like I mentioned before, I am not one, but when people reward your works by comparing them with Art it motivates you, or at least me, to build some more. One of those visitors was Marianna Monentes, who asked me if I could make a building for her, a place to expose sculptures. Still drugged by those visitors comments I decided to fulfill her request. I normally don't do orders or requests, neither do I sell my work, but she had some references in which I saw a challenge (sculptures, expose, purple. lavender, jewelry). I decided to make an exemption. I would go build three levelled crown, referring to her inworld jewelry business ...
So, what did I build?
When I build I first make some basic textures of matching colors and create some basic shapes inworld and throw them around on one of my regions till I find a catching shape. I showed Marianna the result as seen in picture one and she replied nearly blind that it was a bit too pink. She had a point there and knowing the building would be placed at an environment friendly region I decided to switch over to a more matching object, a tree, while keeping the basic shapes. I never know where I will end when I build, I keep on improving textures and objects each day I log in again and again in order to find the perfect shape or colors, it also has to be interactive and you don't want to disappoint people, so the past two weeks I harassed Marianna a lot with pictures of update to see if we still would be on the same track. I cheated somehow by using region settings to improve the pictures.
Finally, the build was completed, or at least phase 1 is. It normally takes me half a year to work out a concept and this one was made within some weeks. Knowing myself this place will be improved and expanded in future but for now I am more than happy with the result. And so is Marianna. Sculptures Expo "Odyssey of the Mind" is a place that contains symmetric shapes, fine texture work and a functionality based from thinking out to the box perspective, basically a sculpture on its own. But is it Art? I would say no, but I am not an artist ....
Publisher’s Note: Timo Daehlie is an amazing artist, not only did he create the most phenomenal artistic build for my project, he took it a step farther and made it magic. Thank you, Timo, M.M.
