Home. What does that word mean?
According to Wikipedia, the meaning of home is complex, interpretational and unique. It is also subject to our aspirations, beliefs and historical experiences. Whatever it is, the meaning of home is a way of organizing and understanding the space within ourselves and the way the world is constructed around us.
The meaning of home has both a unique personal and public character. The personal quality of home provides a place to experience our inner being and also allows for the temporary detachment from our public character.
So, when we think of home, I am sure most of us feel that way about the GCG.
On Aug. 31st, we all got this message from Roddie: The GCG is backing up all 8 TB of our users contents. This is to ensure we have an extra backup of everyone's inventory for safe keeping. Sorry for any inconvenience.
I am not sure how others felt but I couldn't wait to be able to log back on with all my friends and family.
I went on SL, and found that I was extremely bored and dissatisfied. Although I have a huge friend list there, I felt more alone than I have since I joined GCG.
I love to build, but I am rather obsolete as a builder there, having never learned mesh yet. The upload costs alone are such a deterrent to even trying. For those who can do mesh, perhaps they spent some time on SL creating things they can port over to GCG.
SL used to be fun. I find the fun to be not there anymore. Lots of friends, who are so busy trying to work and earn money...for things they have no time to use because they are working so much.
GCG doesn't have the same feel to it. We all love to create, but we also take time to visit each other, chat, dance or whatever. We are like one big family to each other.
To me, that makes a home. A place where you feel welcome, and appreciated. Whether you are a builder, creator or you just hang out and bring your positive vibes to all, we are able to feel that sense of belonging.
When Roddie announced he had a sim on SL for us all to visit, I was there! And to my delight, so were many others. We laughed and talked, danced and spoke of missing our GCG home.
It became a "home away from home". As we spoke to others on SL who knew of the Cabin from way back, they indicated that they missed it, and also many seemed to develop an interest in the GCG.
There wasn't a Cabin there at the time. mainly just a nice dance area. Even so, it felt like home. Home is not a house. Home is not a piece of land, it is those who gather there in friendship and family. It is that feeling that I believe "home" really defines.
GCG is like a magnet for many. No matter where we are, that sense of home on our grid outshines anything else we find.
Roddie worked so very hard on this grid and welcomed us back with open arms. We are all grateful for this.
As the time we lost our connection to our home drew to a close, we felt the joy of signing on and seeing what we have all created. A home...for me, for you, for all
Thanks Roddie for all you do for us. And to one and all, Welcome Home!
