OpenSimWorld was created by Satyr Gator (AKA Satyr Aeon) as “a new hypergrid directory that lets you know which regions are active and how many people are visiting them.” That is how Satyr described it in one of the early posts made to promote it. It has evolved into so much more and had become a true staple of the hypergrid. This article has three purposes. The first goal is to spread the word to any readers who don’t know about OpenSim World. The second is to explain how to use it for travel. The third is to explain how to sign up for it with your region and get a beacon so you can participate fully in the extended community offered by this site.
OpenSimWorld is a web based tool that integrates with your in world viewer. The website that lists hypergrid regions you can visit this way is found here:
You can view the regions using different categories after you click on the button that says Regions. Once you select a region, there are a few ways you can hypergrid teleport.
You’ll see a section on the right sight with three little blue buttons you can click to teleport; Hop, V3HG, HG, Local Grid. I’ve never actually tried the V3HG one but the buttons, when clicked will communicate with your in world viewer to teleport you to the location. I’ve always used the HG and local grid buttons myself and found them to be great. Every now and then technology just wants to glitch so if for some reason that doesn’t work, you can just copy and paste the address in the box right under the word Hypergrid directly into a map search and teleport that way.
To get a package of tools to set up your own OpenSimWorld beacon on your region or land, you can go to the region hosted by OpenSimWorld on Metropolis Metaversum.
You can use the buttons on the OpenSimWorld site to get there via this page:
Or type the hypergrid address into a map search to teleport there:
The package is a big box of tools you’ll see right when you land on the region called OpenSimWorld Package 0.914. Right click and take a copy. The box will go into you’re my Suitcase folder. Satyr Aeon is Satyr Gator’s avatar name on Metro. The region itself is an interesting destination with some fun NPCS and an outer space distant planet landing feeling.
After you teleport home, you can rez and open the box with the OpenSimWorld Tools. Inside is a beacon as well as a HUD, which is another way you can travel and connect to the website. There is also a notecard with very clear instructions on how to use both items.
To activate and use a beacon to allow others to teleport to your region using the site and tools, you first need to register on the OpenSimWorld site and put your region info on it.
After you create an account to log in to OpenSimWorld, go to Regions. There will be a little green button up on the right that says + Add Your region. Click that and you will get to the page to start entering your region information here:
Once you’ve done that, you can edit your info and add pictures when you’re logged in and on the page for the region that is yours.
This is the best way to promote a region in the OpenSim in the modern era of the hypergrid. So if you would like to be social, show off your builds, get folks to come dance at your nightclubs or partake in your virtual role play group, this is the key.
